Ch\u00e2teau de Didonne - A family and architectural saga<\/span><\/h1>

Chateau de Didonne is located in the commune of Semussac, a few kilometers from Royan,<\/a> of the Gironde estuary, in the Charente Maritime department.<\/p>

Noble origins<\/strong><\/h3>

The first traces of the de Didonne family date back to the 11th century, and are rooted in the region's rich history. The ch\u00e2teau as we know it today is the fruit of a long family and architectural saga spanning several centuries.<\/p>

An 18th-century renaissance<\/strong><\/h3>

Ch\u00e2teau de Didonne underwent a major transformation in the 18th century. The part forming the present residence, the former side wing, was probably built around 1730 by Marie de Bechillon or her son, the Marquis de S\u00e9nect\u00e8re. The latter made it his main country residence and set about considerably enlarging his lands, acquiring neighboring estates and extending his influence in the region.<\/p>

A precious heritage<\/strong><\/h3>

On the death of the Marquis de S\u00e9nect\u00e8re, his son continued his work and the ch\u00e2teau continued to prosper. The estate subsequently passed to his daughter, married to the Marquis d'Armenti\u00e8res. After the French Revolution, the Didonne estate was sold by the State and passed through several successive owners.<\/p>

Transformation and rebirth<\/strong><\/h2>

In the 19th century, Count Alfred de la Grendi\u00e8re, mayor of Semussac and then Royan, modified the ch\u00e2teau to its current form. In 1979, the property was acquired by the Coop\u00e9rative Agricole Cozes-Saujon, who installed a museum of agricultural equipment, which remained active until 2006.<\/p>
