The Talmont sur Gironde cemetery

The Talmont sur Gironde cemetery is located on the promontory of the peninsula of the village of Talmont, on the edge of the Gironde estuary, in the Charente Maritime region, very close to the Ste Radegonde church. It is a marine cemetery which brings together two former Protestant and Catholic cemeteries, several tombs, some dating from the 18th century, and several cenotaphs.

Witness to the history of the city, the cemetery of Talmont Sur Gironde was still divided into two separate cemeteries, one Catholic, the other Protestant, until the 1950s. What we see today is what remains of the old medieval cemetery, which surrounded the Saintonge churches.

You can enjoy this unique place in season, filled with hollyhocks, and close to the Church of St. Radegonde, dedicated to a Thuringian princess, who became Queen of the Franks by marrying Clotaire I, son of Clovis.

Talmont sur Gironde is a village located on the right bank of the Gironde estuary near the towns of Meschers sur Gironde and St Georges de Didonne. It is remarkable because it is located on a peninsula. It used to be a ‘closed’, fortified town. It is very pleasant to walk on foot in the small alleys lined with hollyhocks.

It is easy to get to Meschers sur Gironde and along the coast, and St Georges de Didonne by crossing the forest of Suzac. You can also get to Royan by taking the ring road.

Not far from Talmont, is the village of Meschers sur Gironde, and its many places to discover: start with the church of St Saturnin, then the port of Meschers.
