Chateau de Cheverny

Château de Cheverny: A jewel of the Loire Valley

Visit Château de Cheverny is one of the castles the most emblematic of the Loire Valley. Located in the Sologne region of France, it is distinguished by its classical architecture and rich history, having belonged to the same family for over six centuries. This private château, still inhabited today, is renowned for its sumptuously furnished interior and beautifully manicured gardens. It was also the inspiration for Hergé's creation of the Château de Moulinsart in the adventures of Tintin.

History of Château de Cheverny

The lands of Cheverny were acquired by the Hurault family in the XIVᵉ century. The present château was built between 1624 and 1630 by Jacques Bougier, on the remains of an ancient fortress. Over the centuries, the château remained in the same family, with the exception of a few interruptions, and was opened to the public in 1914, becoming one of the first Loire châteaux to welcome visitors.

Architecture of Château de Cheverny

The château is an outstanding example of the French classical style of the XVIIᵉ century. Its façade of Bourré stone, which whitens and hardens over time, lends the building a luminous elegance. The architecture is characterized by rigorous symmetry, with a central body flanked by side pavilions with domed roofs. The interiors are richly decorated, featuring Gobelins tapestries, Louis XIV and Louis XV furniture and precious works of art.
