Chateau de Didonne is located in the commune of Semussac, a few kilometers from Royan, of the Gironde estuary, in the Charente Maritime department.
The first traces of the de Didonne family date back to the 11th century, and are rooted in the region's rich history. The château as we know it today is the fruit of a long family and architectural saga spanning several centuries.
Château de Didonne underwent a major transformation in the 18th century. The part forming the present residence, the former side wing, was probably built around 1730 by Marie de Bechillon or her son, the Marquis de Sénectère. The latter made it his main country residence and set about considerably enlarging his lands, acquiring neighboring estates and extending his influence in the region.
On the death of the Marquis de Sénectère, his son continued his work and the château continued to prosper. The estate subsequently passed to his daughter, married to the Marquis d'Armentières. After the French Revolution, the Didonne estate was sold by the State and passed through several successive owners.
In the 19th century, Count Alfred de la Grendière, mayor of Semussac and then Royan, modified the château to its current form. In 1979, the property was acquired by the Coopérative Agricole Cozes-Saujon, who installed a museum of agricultural equipment, which remained active until 2006.
Sold several times, the Château de Didonne finally found its new vocation when it was transformed into a charming hotel and restaurant. Today, it offers visitors an elegant and refined setting, steeped in history and charm, for an unforgettable stay in the heart of Charente-Maritime.
