Le Chateau de la Maroutière is located in the former village of Saint-Fort, now part of the the municipality of Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne, in the department of Mayenne.
The château's history dates back to the Middle Ages, when a feudal manor house occupied the site. In the 15th century, after the Hundred Years' War, the manor house was refurbished in Renaissance style.
Over the following centuries, the château had several owners, including the de La Maroutière family, who gave it its current name. In the 17th century, the château was enlarged and embellished, and became an important seigneurial residence.
The Château de la Maroutière is of significant architectural interest for the following reasons:
Château de la Maroutière is a fine example of Renaissance architecture. The main body of the château is built of schist and granite stone, and is flanked by two round towers. The slate roof is pierced by dormer windows.
The château's interior is richly decorated with woodwork, tapestries and paintings. The château also boasts a beautiful carved stone fireplace.
Today, the château is privately owned and not open to the public. However, it is possible to admire it from the outside and stroll through the surrounding park.
The château is used by the new owner, the Vnb companyfor the Vnb Fest' festivalwhich takes place every summer on the chateau grounds.
