Every summer, Royan's beach becomes the stage for a show as moving as it is exceptional: a violin on the sanda festival of open-air classical music which attracts thousands of spectators. Created in a spirit of sharing and openness, this unique event combines the beauty of the sea with the richness of the symphonic repertoire. It is one of cultural events in Charente-Maritime the most popular, a must-see the country - Visit France: regional guide.
A violin on the sand is a festival in Royan born in 1987 from the poetic idea of Philippe Tranchet. The idea? A violin alone on the beach, facing the ocean. The first concert was a suspended moment. Since then, the event has grown, while retaining its intimate atmosphere.
The festival's name evokes this powerful image of a musical instrument on the sand, between sea and sky. The idea quickly caught on. In the 1990s, professional musicians joined the project.
Over the years, a violin on the sand turned into a symphony orchestra conducted by Jérôme Pillement, with over 75 musicians. What was once a small concert has become a masterful show, with audiences sometimes exceeding 60,000 people.
In 2012, the festival adds a parallel program: A Violin in the City. This "off" festival offers free concerts in various venues in and around Royan: museums, churches, gardens, markets... another way of experiencing music.

The 2025 edition of a violin on the sand promises to be exceptional. Three great evenings are planned on the Grande Conche beach: July 19, 22 and 25 at 10pm. Each time, a different program: opera arias, film music, classic pieces that can't be ignored.
From internationally renowned soloists violinists, sopranos, trumpeters and pianists. The show is entirely free on the sand. For added comfort, there will be paying stands are available for reservation.
Each evening concludes with a fireworksthat lights up the sky and the faces of amazed onlookers.
