It was built in the 19th century and completed in 1857 to protect the town from Rochefort English assaults. Shortly after its construction, it was converted into a prison. Today, Fort Boyard is best known for the TV show filmed within its walls.

Fort Boyard can be reached by pleasure boat, or by one of the many cruise liners departing from Ile d'Aix, Ile d'Oléron or even Fort Boyard. La Rochelle.
