Vallières lighthouse in the city of Saint Georges de Didonne is a lighthouse located on the Vallières cliff, close to the port of Saint Georges de Didonne and the main beach. It was built at the end of the 19th century, from 1898 to 1902. However, it has not been used since the late 1960s. It is one of of the best-known lighthouses in the Charente-Maritime region.
The building, which overlooks the port, is distinguished by its square limestone tower shape, with a granite base, and is listed as a historic monument. historical monuments since 2012. It has 144 steps and is 36 metres high, dominated by a copper dome. It has 4 storeys - a total of 29 metres, on top of which stands a 7-metre lantern.
The lighthouse was bombed the day after the liberation of the 'Poche de Royan' in April 1945. Traces of this bombardment remain - shell marks on the lighthouse walls.
The lighthouse faces Pointe de Grave, and you can use the coastal path to get to the main beach of St Georges de Didonnefrom the lighthouse to the harbour and nautical center. From the lighthouse, you can also see the pointe de Suzacits park and forest.
